The E36 M3 GTR is the road-going version of the competition machine built to compete in the 1994 ADAC German GT Cup Touring Car series. Essentially a race car with license plates, it features a stripped out interior and lightweight body panels (dropping the curb weight to 1300 kg), fender flares to accommodate the 18-inch wheels and tires, adjustable front and rear spoilers, a full roll cage and a 300-hp version of the S50 B30 engine.
The Ford GT was assembled in the Ford Wixom plant and painted by Saleen, Incorporated at their Saleen Special Vehicles plant in Troy, Michigan, USA.
The result: an enormous 225 kW (306 hp) catapult the BMW 1 Series Coupé from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds. The BMW 125i needs just 6.4 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h with a top speed of 245 km/h and 160 kW (218 PS).
The same year, Mustangs achieved the first of many notable competition successes, winning first and second in class in the Tour de France international rally. The car’s American competition debut, also in 1964, was in drag racing, where private individuals and dealer-sponsored teams campaigned Mustangs powered by 427 cu. in. V8s.
The GT-R of the 1990s included a 2.6 L straight six-cylinder twin-turbo engine producing 206 kW (276 hp). The stock turbo-chargers were of a hybrid steel/ceramic design allowing them to spool up faster due to the light nature of the ceramic exhaust wheel.
